The Official Blog for the College Republicans Chapter at the University of Texas at Austin

Hey y’all,

The new College Republicans Executive Board for Fall 2012 would like to welcome you to our official blog for our chapter. Our goal is to keep you engaged with local, state, and national politics that are salient to college students. We will strive to post and comment on political issues, events, and policies of the day in a timely manner. Look, we are college students too with simliar hopes, dreams, and aspirations as any other group of college students across the country. We want a good college education, a good job upon graduation, and the fortune and blessing in surrounding ourselves with loving families and friends in pursuit of greater societal goals.

Our country just went through one of the worst recessions since the Great Depression. Thousands of Americans have lost their homes and their savings. As result of the economic downturn, our unemployment rate has climbed north of 10% in the last few years. 8.2% of Americans today are still jobless; that rate is much higher for young people and minorities. We simply want to ask for accountability from our political leaders. We believe a vibrant democracy requires an informed and active citizenry. It is our job as the people to ask the tough questions and demand answers from our elected officials. With the election coming up in November, it is again our civic duty to demand answers for their actions.

So what does it mean to be conservative on a college campus? As College Republicans, we want to conserve the letter and spirit of the Declaration of Independence in that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.” We want to conserve the American Dream for millions of Americans looking for leadership in their state legislatures, Congress, and the White House. We want to conserve the hard-fought liberties and freedoms passed down to us by our forefathers. We want to conserve the constitutional principles of federalism and limited government. We want to conserve a free market economy because we believe it has been working for America and will continue to make this country wealthy and prosperous for generations to come.

Our hope is to use this blog to stimulate, converse, and learn from each other and about current political affairs in our state and in our country. We ask you not to prejudge our political orientation based on media portrayal and established notions about our Party. In return, we will honestly and in good faith have constructive conversations with you on solutions and means to solve our national problems.
